2006

25 December - A new address has been set up: PHRF-NB, PO Box 356, Washington, NC 27889.

November - Our office manager has moved and thus we are in a state of transition.  Our telephone has voice mail and we check it periodically.  Our email still works and is checked periodically.  At the moment the address stays the same and is being forwarded automatically.

4 April - A number of calls have come into the office about Asymmetrical Spinnaker Mid Girth (SMG) and how to measure.  A white paper describing how to measure SMG has been posted in the White Papers section.  It is pretty straight forward.

3 March - The 2006 Forms and Instructions are now posted.  The renewal forms will be mailed out next week for anyone who has a 2004 or 2005 PHRF certificate.  Please note the new requirement for the Cruising Headsail Credit (6 seconds): "sail must be of a woven polyester material (no exotic sail materials such as pentax, mylar, kevlar, spectra, technora, etc.)".  Also a number new fields were added to help clarify to us how the asymmetric spinnaker is being used.

24 January - The Annual Meeting was held tonight at the East Greenwich Yacht Club at 1900.   The following board was voted in: Commodore: Mike Koster, Rating Co-Chairman: Kenneth Medeiro & Geoff Van Gorkom, Secretary: Robert Chappelle, Treasurer: Roy Guay.   The Treasurer's Report was given: Expenses about $500 over Income.  The number of applications is down from previous years.  It was announced that the PHRF Form will be changing to add more specifics about spinnakers and a few other things.  We were asked about crew weight.  We responded that we recommend to the Race Committees that if they have a problem that they implement crew weight limits for their regattas via the Sailing Instructions vice implementing it as part of the PHRF rating.  We will post those limit recommendations.    We had the usual discussions about the credits for roller fullers we give.  We will try to address these again at our next meeting.  We were also asked to look at the 12 second credit for 110% jibs for some boats and not giving this credit to some boats except possibly for Non-spinnaker racing, especially boats with Fractional Rigs and big mains.  We will take this into advisement also.

PHRF or Narragansett Bay is the performance handicap rating association for Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound. This is the only focus of the organization - PHRF-NB does not sponsor sailing events, but works cooperatively with any number of organizations that do so in the areas covered by PHRF-NB.

PHRF-NB rates, on average, over 600 boats per year. These boats range from Thistles to Open 60's. PHRF-NB has also been at the forefront of some PHRF innovations, including, over the past several years, creating guides for race committees for handling sport boats, time-on-time scoring calcuations, and non-spinnaker adjustments.

This site contains a wide range of information about PHRF-NB, and all the information a competitor will need to get their vessel rated, inform the rating committee of vessel modifications, or appeal their rating (or challenge someone else's). Also available are the current rating list (after 1 April - before 1 April see the previous year's list), some white papers describing some aspects of the rating process that seem to need clarification, and the meeting minutes/rating actions that are taken at particular committee meetings. All these things are available through the button menu above.

PHRF-NB maintains an office at the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol. Pat Beausoleil continues as our Service Center Manager, and there is no change in the phone/fax/post office box numbers. Your can reach the Service Center at:
