Past Events

19 March - We are expecting the renewal applications to be going out in the mail Friday or Saturday.  Also, note that the email address was incorrect on this page for the office and has been corrected here: PHRFAdmin@PHRF-NB.org.

4 March - The 2008 Certificate Form, Instructions and Cover Letter have been posted (click "Forms" on the left for those that need to fill out a new certificate.  The renewals will be going out probably next week.  Please make note of the office address change and don't send a new form to the old Bristol address.

25 February - Our first meeting post the Annual Meeting was held to define changes to the 2008 form and instructions.  As announced last year, the credits for genoas have changed for this year.  Spinnaker ratings will get a maximum credit of 6 seconds for smaller genoas however non spinnaker ratings will get up to the maximum 12 seconds credit for smaller genoas.  Also, 155% genoas will now have no penalty.  Words were added to the instructions about stay sail limitations. An Opt Out box will be added to the 2008 certificate form which allow members to opt out of having their addresses being provided to NBYA for mail outs.  The 2008 renewal certificate forms and instructions should be mailed out by the second week in March.

30 January - The annual meeting was held at the Newport Yacht Club with a small group of members showing up.  Defining "Cutter Rig" was discussed.  The new genoa credits were also discussed.  Several suggestions for additional information on the website for ratings were made.  It was also suggested that PHRF-NB allow entry of new or modified certificates via the website and to all payment at the same time via PayPal or credit card.

29 December - The Annual meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday 30 January 7pm at the Newport Yacht Club.  Click here for the agenda.

PHRF or Narragansett Bay is the performance handicap rating association for Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound. This is the only focus of the organization - PHRF-NB does not sponsor sailing events, but works cooperatively with any number of organizations that do so in the areas covered by PHRF-NB.

PHRF-NB rates, on average, over 600 boats per year. These boats range from Thistles to Open 60's. PHRF-NB has also been at the forefront of some PHRF innovations, including, over the past several years, creating guides for race committees for handling sport boats, time-on-time scoring calcuations, and non-spinnaker adjustments.

This site contains a wide range of information about PHRF-NB, and all the information a competitor will need to get their vessel rated, inform the rating committee of vessel modifications, or appeal their rating (or challenge someone else's). Also available are the current rating list (after 1 April - before 1 April see the previous year's list), some white papers describing some aspects of the rating process that seem to need clarification, and the meeting minutes/rating actions that are taken at particular committee meetings. All these things are available through the button menu above.
